Extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and presenting profound challenges to our communities across the globe, yet they also underscore the enduring resilience of our city and the vital importance of our vision and mission. As we navigate an era marked by unprecedented climate shifts, extreme weather events including torrential rainstorms and super typhoons are defining features of our time – the world has been experiencing the devastating impacts of climate change while widespread extreme weather events have become the new normal. Against this backdrop, coastal cities, like Hong Kong, are particularly vulnerable to compound flash flood and coastal flood risks, especially when torrential rain and storm surge occur simultaneously. At the same time, rapid urbanization, urban population growth and sustained economic development have been generating greater volumes of wastewater. Addressing stormwater and wastewater management therefore demands more than robust flood defense and sewage treatment infrastructure, it calls for forward-looking strategies and the strategic adoption of innovative technologies.

The Drainage Services Department is delighted to co-host the Hong Kong Water Expo 2027 with the Water Supplies Department in the 30th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Co-locating with the IWA Global Utilities Summit, the Hong Kong Water Expo 2027 will be a new flagship platform for leaders, policy makers and practitioners from governments and utilities across the globe to connect, share insights, and help shaping the future of the water sector. It will also provide exhibitors and solution providers with distinctive opportunity to engage directly with key decision-makers and showcase innovative, tailored region-relevant solutions to meet evolving water challenges.
